About Me

Stephanie H. Abrams, M.D., is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. After completing her medical degree at University of Texas in Houston in 2000, Dr. Abrams completed her residency in general pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Abrams has a special interest in medical education and served on the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Committee from 2005-2013.  As faculty at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Abrams furthered her own education by pursuing her Master’s of Science in Clinical Research (MS awarded by Baylor College of Medicine Graduate School in 2010). As a clinician scientist, Dr. Abrams has had years of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study childhood obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children. In addition to her work as medical director of Kamp K’AANA (Kids achieving activity & Nutrition Awareness; a 2-week residential summer camp program for obese children), Dr. Abrams serves on the NAFLD Advisory Board of The NASPGHAN (North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology And Nutrition) Foundation. Additionally, she is currently serving as Chair of the Obesity Task Force of the NASPGHAN Nutrition Committee.

Prior to Dr. Abrams move to Los Angeles in 2013, Dr. Abrams was also a transplant hepatologist. In addition to liver disease, Dr. Abrams special clinical interests include Childhood Obesity/Syndromic Obesity, Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, and Abdominal Migraine), portal hypertension, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and the nutritional management of gastrointestinal diseases (including special dietary management and manipulation of intestinal bacteria with probiotic therapies).

In 2013, Dr. Abrams received the Kudos to the Caregiver Award from the Teen Advisory Board of Texas Children’s Hospital. This award recognizes a medical provider who provides exceptional patient-centered care and is the only award voted on and given by the patients.

Outside of her medical practice and educational pursuits, Dr. Abrams enjoys running and has completed 10 half marathons and 3 full marathons. She also enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters snowboarding, hanging at the beach, and enjoying family life. She is fluent in Spanish.
