About Me
Man Shim, MD, MS, chose a career in medicine based on his faith and desire to serve others during their most vulnerable times. His goal was to join a profession committed to the higher purpose of helping others.
The rheumatology specialty demands a broad knowledge of all subspecialties of internal medicine, and often deals with cases that seem to defy explanation. Dr. Shim chose rheumatology because he was drawn to its intellectual challenge and sought to develop genuine and long-term relationships with his patients. Each day he is met with the mystery and clinical challenges of rheumatic diseases, which are often diagnosed clinically and without any definitive tests.
“Being a rheumatologist affords me the immense privilege to improve lives and restore hope in patients who are devastated by their disabling and deforming rheumatic diseases. Developing lifelong friendships that are based on mutual respect and caring for patients with chronic illnesses are most humbling yet rewarding experiences in my life.”
Dr. Shim’s care philosophy is focused on treating his patients like his own family. He tries his best to place himself in their shoes and will not recommend any treatment that he wouldn’t consider for himself or his family members. He has taught this ideology to countless medical students, interns, residents and fellows throughout his time as a rheumatologist, as he finds teaching to be extremely rewarding and exhilarating. Dr. Shim was also named “Top Doctor” in rheumatology by Los Angeles Magazine in both 2018 and 2019 for providing excellent care to patients in California.
Dr. Shim was born and raised in South Korea and immigrated to the United States when he was eleven years old. Therefore, he is fluent in both English and Korean. In his free time, Dr. Shim likes to watch and play sports, hike, watch movies and listen to his wife play piano, who trained at The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
