About Me
Charles Eifrig, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons with expertise in diagnosing and treating medical and surgical retinal disorders including macular degeneration, retinal detachment, macular hole, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, macular pucker and complications from cataract surgery. Dr. Eifrig lectures across the U.S. on diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and micro-incisional vetrectomy surgery (MIVS).
He has authored numerous papers in the peer-reviewed ophthalmology literature, is a principal investigator in various clinical trials and a manuscript reviewer for two ophthalmology journals and serves on the panel reviewer committee for the journal Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging. Dr. Eifrig has been honored by Orange County Medical Association as a “Physician of Excellence” in the field of ophthalmology. He also was among the first retina surgeons to perform macular surgery utilizing intra-operative Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
He received his Doctor of Medicine degree at University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, where he was awarded an academic merit award for scholastic achievement and excellence in ophthalmic research. He completed his transitional internship at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego and was named “Outstanding Intern of the Year” by the pediatric service. Dr. Eifrig completed his residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami and was honored as chief resident. He then completed a vitreoretinal medical and surgical fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute where he was the Director of Ocular Trauma and Emergency Services.
Dr. Eifrig was in private practice in North Carolina and an assistant clinical professor at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. During his tenure in North Carolina, Dr. Eifrig also served as “Team Eye Surgeon” for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League from 2005-2008. Dr. Eifrig relocated to Orange County in 2008 where he joined Retina Associates of Orange County and continues to see patients in his Laguna Hills, Newport Beach, and Santa Ana offices. Dr. Eifrig is also an adjunct clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at University of Southern California Roski Eye Institute at Keck School of Medicine.
